Boulder, Colo., police started using PropertyRoom.com in 2007, mainly to unload property that couldn't be traced back to the owners. Before items are put up for auction, they are posted on the police department’s Web site for four weeks. Previously, the department had been stuck holding onto items for up to three years, said spokeswoman Sarah Huntley.

Bidding. Get some information about the type of bidding that normally occurs at these auctions. Feel free to ask the consultant about the expected price of a particular vehicle. When the auction starts, raise your hand and registration number card high in the air so the auctioneer can see you. Bids can be in increments of $100, $250 or even $500. This will be up to the auctioneer's discretion. Before bidding, remember that once a bid is made it cannot be withdrawn. Once the bid is won then the bid cards must be immediately filled out and signed. If this is not done then the vehicle can be re-offered. The government can reject any bid
Additional government sites. There are a few additional sites that can provide tips on government auctions. Guide to Federal Auctions gives a rundown of the various agencies. It provides information about what they sell as well as the departments' websites. GSA supplies information about auction sources. Auctions can be searched by state or auction house
The bidding started out fairly tame. Individuals there bought a beat up Impala for $525, a Chevy Astro van for $425, and the shittiest Chrysler PT Cruiser I have ever seen for $300. As for the awesome Ford Escort wagon? Well, it didn’t do so hot, in part, Kevin told me, because it’s so light and has low scrap value, and because parts are in low demand:

This company doesn’t charge seller verification fees, which is a nice bonus. It’s also free to list items on the site and you get one free relisting if an item doesn’t sell the first time. This company charges a 3.5 percent final value fee, which Bonanza deducts from your sale. The minimum fee is 50 cents, no matter how small your sale and the maximum fee is $250. If you sign up for professional subscriptions you get a seller’s badge, which boosts your credibility. You also can see your traffic and give buyers coupons for your items. Bonanza’s listing feature comes with a photo editing feature called Background Burner that automatically removes the background from product photos you upload. In our research, we found this feature was slightly glitchy, but a built-in-photo editor can save you time and money as you upload your listings.

In other cases, questionable individuals also claim to organize auctions for seized items, create good looking websites and insist that all the objects are of high-end value and rare. They even send the products to the buyers who purchase, but in reality, all these items (mostly jewelry, brand name clothes, and other materials easy to ship) are nothing but cheap products made in Asia sold at ridiculous prices to the victims who believe they got amazing unique pieces.

All items listed in any police auction are available for viewing and inspection prior to the sale. As you browse the government auction sites above, you'll notice some link you to additional sites run by private contractors. These contractors have legitimate relationships with the government, but bidder beware: other private companies will try to make their auctions seem like government auctions as a marketing ploy. Always start with the legitimate links provided by the government itself. Good luck!

Car auctions are a weird and fantastic world, and in my two decades in that scene, I've seen some pretty astonishing things. The old adage that "your decisions in life dictate your future" really rings true at an auction. This business is all about split-second decisions; that can mean buying anything from a two-year-old Ferrari to a 20-year-old Buick. Whether you've just sprung for junk or pure gold, you're stuck with it. When I tell folks, "You just bought that car and whatever just fell off it," they laugh -- unless they're hearing me say it for the 200th time.
Payment is due by 4:45pm on Friday, January 25th. If you'd like to have your card charged after the auction by Roller personnel and a paid receipt sent to you, please respond to the invoice email with your desire to have your card on file charged. We will not process your card without your email consent. You may pay online or at our office in Denver on January 24th or 25th from 8:15am - 4:45pm. Payments will be accepted in Visa, MasterCard, Discover, cash, bank wire transfer, cashier check, personal/company check approved by TeleCheck or accompanied by a letter of guarantee from the bank. (Payments in cash, bank wire transfer, cashier check or check with a letter of guarantee from the bank will receive a 3% reduction off of the buyer’s premium.) No payments will be taken at the auction location in Longmont.

We were in the process of downsizing when a friend attended a program by Mr. Will Farmer on appraising, auctions and today’s styles and trends. She relayed that our mid-century modern furniture was back in vogue. We were familiar with the Farmer name from Antiques Roadshow, but knew little about the auction business. We showed Will Farmer, now owner of the business, photographs of our furniture and he was interested. He came to our home, looked at the furniture, described the auction process and carefully reviewed the contract we would sign. From start to finish the entire process was very professional. The Salem, Virginia gallery is spacious and well organized with plenty of parking. The entire staff is very friendly and courteous. The movers were very nice and careful. We were kept informed at every step. We were given a possible range of prices each item might bring, but no promises were made. Auction day was fascinating and fun. Some items brought more than expected and some less. In the end it was a wonderful experience and one we would not hesitate to do again.
